Preparation
Make sure you have updated shop drawings on hand. Confirm correct dimensions and quantities of the columns you have received.
Carefully unbox the column covers. If distorted, some minor physical force may be used to put them into the desired shape, however do not force it. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer for assistance.
Match the columns with their other halves.
Single High Installation
Install with supplied alignment clips - used for promoting accurate matching of column cover halves.
Position first half of the column cover, then attach the metal to the column at both ends (top and bottom). The clips should be set immediately behind the GRG at the seams and the midpoint of the piece.
Pre-drill pilot holes through the face of the column cover into the clips.
Attach the GRG to the clips with drywall screws and countersink the screw heads.
Install alignment clips at the top and bottom and about 18” o.c. along the sides of the first half. Make sure clips are anchored with drywall screws and the screw heads should be countersunk.
Make sure the alignment and fit is correct while loosely fitting the second half of the column to the first half.
Apply continuous bead of urethane adhesive across the edges of the first half.
Secure alignment clips on one side of the first half. Make sure the second half is aligned perfectly with the first half. Then secure alignment clips and counter sink the screw heads.
To make the best fit, band clamps or webbing may be needed to pull the two halves together.
Double High Installation
A lot like single high installation (see above), but there exist a few differences.
The tops of the lower column covers and the bottom of the upper column cover pieces have 2” wide horizontal flanges that are for stacking the pieces.
After completing the single high instructions, install the horizontal kickers anchored to the center structural column that should fit underneath the flanges of the lower pieces. The kickers and attachments should be sized to support the load of the upper column pieces.
Put a bead of urethane based adhesive on top of the 2” wide top flange of the lower column. Install the upper column cover pieces by following the single high installation steps.
Patching and Joint Finishing
Wipe the column cover with a damp sponge to allow moisture to be absorbed before patching and finishing the joining, which will be done with a gypsum joint compound or casting plaster.
Column covers with flattened spots at the joints use a joint compound to be finished. Paper tape or fiberglass tape are options for adhesives. Three coats will be necessary for finishing.
Column covers without flat spots at the joints use casting plaster to be finished. Only one or two coats are necessary for this situation.
Minor dents or dings can be patched with a joint compound or a casting plaster. A damp sponge should be used to wipe the area prior to finishing.
When the column covers are in places with critical artificial or natural lighting, a level 5 finish must be applied.
When the paint used on the column covers has sheen in it, a level 5 finish must be applied.
Column covers must be primed with a primer before it is decorated. Sometimes, more than one coat of primer will be necessary, and sometimes sanding will be necessary after application.
Storage
Column covers should be stored in a dry location without dirt or mud.
Columns should stay in wooden crates or frames until installation if they were delivered in those containers.
Containers should be stored on level ground. When the columns are delivered in a loose position, store them in a horizontal position (open side face down, not stacked) or attempt to leave them in a vertical position (braced to keep them straight up).
